I have the back ups, but considering the images were gone also, restoring would be useless.

After you sync songs or videos to your iTouch, iPad or iPhone it will look like the picture below?

As you can see, the videos appear on top of the music. This will make the device doesn't use the artwork for the current album to be displayed while browsing Albums or Artists. It uses the video caps instead, as the results it didn't look good.

I just found a solution for this issue, stumble upon it by accident last night.
Every videos that came with a Deluxe pack of an Album or Single or EP doesn't have the disc number in them.
The trick is to add the Disc number in each videos on an Album, and the albums, singles or EPs that sync to a device will respect the tracklist provided (just like the picture below).

And if the sort is accordingly to the tracklist there will be no issue regarding the artwork anymore. :)

Recently i got my hands on this new Readyatdawn game, God of War: Ghost of Sparta. Like all other God of War series the game offers full slashing action entirely...from start to finish.
I already beat the game on Spartan (Hard Mode), and just unlocked the treasures, one of them is The Temple of Zeus. its kinda like a "Shopping Mall", you buy the bonus items with the Red Orbs that you've collected during the game. But the stuffs there were expensive, how the hell do i find a 250000 worth of red orbs.
And then i noticed this item called "the King's Ring" (once belonged to king midas) it gives you 10x of the red orbs, and you can use this item during the battle mode. and if combined with Bonds of Ares (which gives you infinite magic) this is what you get...

I bought all of the stuffs on Temple of Zeus in under half an hour...ALL OF THEM.
The enemies i fought on Battle Mode were Armored Cyclops and the dude with armor and a huge gear in its hand.

Ever wondered why there were hollow stars and full stars on iTunes album rating??
The hollow stars represent suggested rating for an album based on the ratings you put on a song in the particular album.
Hollow stars rating only appears under an album, as for a song uses a full star rating.

BACK UP YOUR ITLP BEFORE DOING THIS MOD!!!!

i just downloaded this Nightmare iTunesLP with itlp files in it, but i noticed that there's a nighmare lyric video inside the itlp folder but when i load the LP to iTunes the lyric video was nowhere to be found.
so i modified the files inside the itlp folder and make the lyric video appear under the video menu. here it goes...

the files need to be modified were:
videos.css inside the css folder
videos.html inside the view folder
data.js inside the controllers folder and
video.js also inside the controllers folder

first open up videos.css and find /buttonVideo02.png); } then add this line right after it

#videos #video3 { left:563px; top:573px; background:url(../images/videos/buttonVideo03.png); }

close and save it

next open up videos.html and find and delete it but do not delete and

close and save it

open data.js find thumb02.png then add this line after it

the files need to be modified were:
videos.css and data.js

open up video.css and find #videos #duration {
    position:absolute;
    width:100px;
    height:25px;
    left:520px;
    top:500px;
    text-align:right;
    color:#000000;
}

change the left:520px to left:861px and top:500px to top:530px
close and save it

then open data.js
the goal in editing the data.js is to make the duration displays the real duration of the videos
find

TAG!!! why this things were so important....

ever wonder why your mp3s only shows the file names, or even worst it looks like this "artist - track01.mp3" or "track01.mp3" or "unknown artist - unknown song - unknown album"?
even when you had the files renamed the song info still wont shows up.
i'll tell you why, cos it's not properly tagged!!!
you need to tag you music files so that any media player would be able to recognize who sings it and what song that plays.
there were lots of information can be embeded on a tag, such as the artist, the song title, the album, the cover, the composer etc
when an mp3 is properly tagged it dont matter what the file names were, any media player will only display the information it reads from the tag.
tagging an mp3 or any other formats can be done with any tag editor software or any media player with tag editing support such as iTunes, winamp, foobar2000, musicmatch, jetaudio etc.
and not only mp3s can be tagged, there were other multimedia formats that support tagging such as m4a, flac, wma, musepack (thats all i know) even now some video files can be tagged to such as mp4 or m4v.
so for a better viewing and playing, tag your multimedia files with their proper respective informations.

CONSOLIDATING

okay now...ever since 4 days ago i started consolidating all of my music and video files with iTunes.
its not an easy task but i'm sure it'll be done in about a month or two.
it would take some time to copy 289GB of music files from one folder to another with a limit 2GB per copies.
why 2GB? cos i only had 2GB of free space.
also as of now all other i mean ALL OTHER music player were removed from my computer, i only use iTunes and foobar2000 as music player.
iTunes is set to handle m4a and mp3, as for all the lossless format i trusted foobar to play them.
why i choose the two of them?? iTunes has the ability to organize media files in outstanding way. no need to rename the files folders anymore cos iTunes will do that for you and don't forget the unicode support.
as for foobar2000, it has the ability to fix corrupted old vbr header on mp3s. old vbr header is those mp3 with vbr mode encodings prior from the standard v0, v1 and v2 so if you have any mp3 that have an insane song length where infact it wasn't that long, you should try fixing the vbr header using foobar2000. also it has an audio scrobbler for last.fm.
so i recommend iTunes and foobar2000 for those of you who like to listening to music and organize them.

alkisah ada sebuah grup rentenir (selanjutnya disebut: geng) ternama bernama Mawar Hitam...dimana mereka tidak segan segan melakukan kekerasan pada kliennya yang tidak dapat membayar uang pinjaman pada waktunya,,,

pada suatu hari saat geng Mawar Hitam sedang melakukan aksinya seorang saksi mata (selanjutnya disebut: mahophodit) merasa iba terhadap korban yang sedang disiksa oleh anggota geng Mawar Hitam....si mahophodit pun berusaha menghentikan aksi tersebut, tp apa yang terjadi si mahophodit pun dengan gampangnya dibohongi oleh anggota geng yang mengatakan bahwa aksi tersebut hanyalah bagian dari acara hidden kamera....dan si mahophodit pun bergaya didepan kamera...

geng Mawar Hitam yang dipimpin oleh seorang Pria (selanjutnya disebut: gaylord) yang merasa sudah cukup umur (kenapa cukup umur??? karena gaylord terluka ato lebih tepat teriris jarinya pada saat terjadi penyerangan oleh anggota geng lain, dimana pada saat itu gaylord merasa sudah tidak selincah dulu... )

untuk itu gaylord pun menyerahkan kedudukannya kepada keponakan perempuannya (selanjutnya disebut: waria) yang selama ini sudah memanageri gengnya.

cerita pun berlanjut ketika sang ibunda waria mendesak agar putrinya cepat cepat menikah,,,waria pun berdelit "tete' aja ga punya, mana ada yg mau sama

aku,,," ibunda pun menjawab,,,"iya ilang tete'nya...padahal dulu ibu yakin kamu lahirnya cewe kok,,," dan perburuan jodoh si waria pun dimulai

reality check: ada dialog yang manteb pada saat Fahrani bertemu dengan calon jodohnya direstoran atau cafe lebih tepatnya...pada saat Fahrani menerima telp yang mengatakan bahwa gengnya diserang oleh geng lain si Fahrani secara spontan langsung meneriakkan kalimat yang artinya "fvck yov" dalam bahasa inggris... kemudian pergi meninggalkan sang bunda dan calonnya.

calon yang pertama adalah seorang pengusaha kaya yang berbadan sedikit gendut, pada saat sedang membicarakan tentang perjodohan mereka berdua tiba tiba waria mendapat telp yang mengatakan kalau geng mereka sedang di serang oleh geng lain,,,akhirnya tanpa basa basi waria pun langsung pergi ke medan pertempuran...

di lain pihak si mahophodit yang juga seorang instruktur yoga terlihat sedang berbicara ato lebih tepatnya bersenda gurau dengan para ibu ibu seksi anggota club yoga tersebut (selanjutnya disebut: happy aunty). pembicaraan pun menjurus kearah ranjang dimana akhirnya si mahophodit pun mengaku kalo ternyata dia masih perawan....perawan ato perjaka???

entah kebetulan atau bukan ternyata salah satu happy aunty adalah teman dari ibunda si waria yang tadi mau dicarikan jodoh,,,akirnya mereka pun sepakat untuk menjodohkan mereka, acara pertemuan pun dijanjikan.
pada waktu yang telah ditentukan ternyata lagi lagi si waria di telp oleh teman satu gengnya yang mengatakan bahwa terjadi penyerangan kembali, akhirnya si waria pun kembali ke medan perang

reality check: kenapa adegan berantemnya ga realistis yaaa...??? kenapa jadi kaya film silat dengan ilmu kanuragan tingkat tinggi,,,,??? yang sudah nonton
pasti tau apa yang gw maksud

,,,,akhirnya si waria pun terpojok dan secara tidak sengaja bertemu dengan si mahophodit...adegan kejar kejaran pun terjadi sampe masuk di sebuah mall yang sepi pengunjung, ajaibnya dengan bermodalkan sebuah petasan pop-up si mahophodit dapat menciptakan sebuah tenaga dorong yang luar biasa...sampai para anggota geng lawan pun terlempar

reality check: lebaaaaayyyyy parahhhh,,,,,petasan pesta kok bisa ngeluarin kamehame

...karena terjadi keributan, seorang satpam pun datang ke lokasi sambil berteriak ..."ada apa ini ribut ribut disini??,,,mau saya panggil polisi???....polisiiiiii!!!! polisiiiii....!!!!...."

reality check: si satpam manggil polisi ala tarzan, teriak teriak.... liat sendiri deh,,,gw ngakak abis abisan pas si satpam teriak teriak manggil polisi

dan mereka pun dijodohkan...dengan sedikit pemaksaan dari anggota geng mawar hitam si mahophodit pun mau menerima perjodohan tersebut.
pernikahan pun dilangsungkan...dan lanjut ke malam pertama,,,(bagi si mahophodit)

reality check: asli anjrit najis sumpah hhhhoooeeekkkssss.....adegan di kamar saat Aming berusaha menggoda Fahrani untuk melakukan ritual suami
istri... gw ga tau gimana cara deskripsiinnya.....naaajeeeessss paraaaahhhh......

sampai pada akhirnya si waria pun mengetahui ternyata si mahophodit lah orang yang pernah memberikan puisi kepada dirinya pada waktu di sekolah dulu,,,hati waria pun berbunga bunga,,tanpa basa basi waria langsung menggendong mahophodit ke atas ranjang....

reality check: scene setelah gendong gendongan tersebut,,,totally reversed...si cowo yang meluk cewe dan si cewe ngerokok....wakakakakakakakakaka....:hamme r:

gaya kepemimpinan waria yang tidak menggunakan kekerasan saat mengambil uang pinjaman mengakibatkan geng Mawar Hitam secara perlahan mulai mendapat reputasi bagus di mata masyarakat, apalagi setelah video klipnya dirilis di layar kaca. hal tersebut membuat gaylord yang sudah pensiun tidak suka image baru yang terbentuk dari Mawar Hitam...dia juga yang akhirnya mengadu domba Mawar Hitam dengan geng seterunya yang dipimpin oleh seorang pemuda kaya raya (selanjutnya disebut: pimp brewok). karena tidak suka merasa dituduh telah menculik ibunda dari waria si pimp brewok pun menantang geng Mawar Hitam untuk adu fisik dengan gengnya, tapi si waria menolak ajakan tersebut, dan sebagai gantinya si waria mengajak si pimp brewok bermain bola
...dan ternyata bolanya di ganti durian...

reality check: menghayallll parah,,,,imaginasi yang terlalu tinggi tapi sumber daya dan teknologi terbatas. contohnya bisa diliat pas adegan main bola duren ini, para pemain yang punya ilmu kanuragan tingkat tinggi dengan gampangnya menendang duren kesana kemari...
adegan pun ditutup dengan hujan duren... pokoknya liat sendiri deh hasil dari imaginasi yang tinggi tapi sumberdaya dan teknologi terbatas.

...akirnya semua pun terungkap bahwa gaylord lah otak dari adu domba yang telah terjadi. setelah lama berpisah akirnya mahophodit dan waria disatukan
kembali.

reality check: cukup puas gw nonton film ini,,,,puas tertawa,,,lebih tepatnya menertawakan,,,dan masih banyak scene yang layak ditertawakan tp ga bisa gw tulis semuanya dsini,,, sedangkan untuk ratingnya

Aiaiaiaiaiaia,,,,,aaaa,,,,ehem ehem,,,gw baru aja nonton nih pilemnya dan ngerasa gregetan2 gimana gitu,,,
meskipun gw tau udh ada dua review di tret ini tapi tetep aja gw akan ngerasa berdosa kalo ga ikutan nyeritain gimana "aneh"nya film ini.

Cerita dimulai dengan penggambaran masa lalu dek tamara yg traumatik akibat pernah kecelakaan mobil yg akirnya tertimbun tanah longsoran setelah menghindari seekor kucing yang lagi asik nyebrang jalan yang baru aja pulang dugem. Yang dimana akirnya menyebabkan dek tamara menderita nyctophobia --> biar keren dikit bahasanya :d:d

well sebenernya dek tamara ini mau liburan berdua aja sama calon suaminya yg sedikit sadomachosist tp berhubung si cewe rambut aga2 coklat yg gw ga tau siapa namanya (entah adiknya ato ponakannya) lagi butuh liburan juga maka di ajaklah dia berserta temen temennya, yang antara lain tante murasih <-- typo mirasih maksudnya, sherina look-a-like, mr beibih dan ms beibih, dan the pervert clown.
Berangkatlah mereka menggunakan 2 kapal ke salah satu pulau di kepulauan seribu, pulau pengantin. Disini ada hal yg menarik si sedikit sadomachosist bilang kalo mereka cukup kesulitan dalam menemukan pulau pengantin tersebut (saat adegan tante mirasih bilang kalo dia ngeliat ada orang pake topeng) tapi kenapa pada saat mereka berangkat tuh pulau langsung ketemu yah..?? Silahkan tanya bang rizal..:d:d

mereferensi terhadap orang make topeng, tidak terlihat jelas dia memakai topeng apa (entah petruk ato pinokio) tapi disini gw akan menggunakan sebagai standar yg tak lain tak bukan adalah salah satu personil slipknot chris fehn (lebih jelasnya dapat dibaca dsini)

kembali ke review, setelah tiba di dermaga (yg dimana semua orang pada tau kalo ada dermaga pasti ada pantai) mereka pun langsung turun dan berjalan menuju pantai dan having probably the best times of their life (soalnya the pervert clown teriak pantaaaaaiiiii......!!!!! Saat mereka sedang berjalan di pantai yang seakan akan mempertegas kalo mereka baru ngeliat pantai selama perjalanan mereka dari rumah tadi). Perjalanan mereka pun dilanjutkan tp entah mengapa sherina look-a-like merasa pusing dan mungkin mual (mungkin aja positip hamil ama si sedikit sadomachosist...yup mereka selingkuh diblakang dek tamara ) sehingga memutuskan untuk kembali ke kapal. Oia gw lupa jelasin kalo si nahkoda kapal udh dibunuh pas lagi mabok mabokan di siang bolong oleh chris fehn dengan botol birnya sendiri yang nantinya mayatnya ditemukan oleh sherina look-a-like yang nantinya terpotong jarinya oleh chris fehn dengan golok super tajam (konon lebih tajam dari pedangnya hattori hanzo di kill bill) miliknya sehingga menyebabkan sherina look-a-like dapat diculik oleh chris fehn dan dibawa pulang kerumahnya.

Bisa jadi hostel adalah inspirasi dari film ini. Yup... Selanjutnya adalah penyiksaan (praktek perdukunan lebih tepatnya) terhadap sherina look-a-like, dimulai dari pemakuan tangan sherina look-a-like ke kursi siksaannya sampe kata kata "kalo mau kebal potong jarinya lalu hisap darah yang keluar dari jarinya itu..." inget golok yg super tajam tadi?? Nah inilah kehebatan film ini, golok tersebut ga dipake bwat motong jari sherina look-a-like tp yg dipake adalah gergaji!!! Yup g-e-r-g-a-j-i k-a-y-u yang biasa dipake oleh para tukang bangunan dan mungkin emang karena gergaji kayu sehingga pada waktu motong jarinya sherina look-a-like suaranya mirip kaya orang lagi ngegergaji kayu (denger sendiri kalo ga percaya) dan satu lagi gw tambahin, jarinya sherina look-a-like yg udah kepotong waktu dikapal tadi ternyata tumbuh lagi..yup tumbuh lagi!!!! :d:d:d
seinget gw tadi kata grotesquely looking mentor "kalo mau kebal potong jarinya lalu hisap darah yang keluar dari jarinya itu..." gw yakin 100% dia ga bilang kalo boleh ditambahin telor mungkin ini salah satu penyebab kenapa si chris fehn ga jadi kebal dan dapat dibunuh pada akirnya (salah resep).

Ok chris fehn bosen main main dengan sherina look-a-like dan akirnya mengambil golok super tajam dan menancapkannya ke kepala sherina look-a-like sehingga kebelah jadi dua. Chris fehn pun mencari mangsa baru dan setelah melihat menimbang memutuskan akirnya dipilihlah mr beibih dan ms beibih sebagai korban selanjutnya. Mr beibih dan ms beibih sedang ada dikamar mandi saat mereka mau dibunuh, ms beibih yang sebelumnya ngeluh ke mr beibih kalo air terjunnya bikin gatel memutuskan untuk mandi bertiga dengan tante mirasih dan cewe rambut aga2 coklat yg gw ga tau siapa namanya. Mungkin ini salah satu dari dua adegan keren di film ini, mereka bertiga beneran topless....aaaaaa.....damn lucky cameraman!!! Dan seperti selayaknya sebuah film kalo ada adegan mandi ada juga pasti yang ngintip :d:d.
Mr beibih pun nyamperin ms beibih ke tempat pencucian ikan (mereka mandinya dsana) tapi ternyata mereka tidak sendiri sudah ada chris fehn yang siap menerkam. Matilah mr beibih karena tertusuk tombak tepat dijidat sedangkan ms beibih cm digorok lehernya.

Mayat keduanya pun dibawa pulang oleh chris fehn, yang tidak tau kalau sudah diikuti oleh the pervert clown. Ada yang aneh disini luka sayatan di leher ms beibih sepertinya tidak mengeluarkan darah sama sekali, tapi begitu chris fehn naro panci dibawah lukanya untuk nampung darahnya, tiba2 aja darahnya keluar ngalir ke panci dan hebatnya lagi begitu panci diangkat darahnya brenti...
dengan perasaan panik the pervert clown pun lari kembali ke kapal dan memberitahukan keadaan yg sebenarnya, dan mereka pun pergi ke rumahnya chris fehn sambil bawa golok yg kurang tajam dan senter, sementara dek tamara tinggal dikapal.
Kejar kejaran pun terjadi antara chris fehn dengan sedikit sadomachosist, tante mirasih, cewe rambut aga2 coklat yg gw ga tau siapa namanya dan the pervert clown, sampai akirnya sedikit sadomachosist terkena perangkap dan dibunuh di depan tante mirasih, cewe rambut aga2 coklat yg gw ga tau siapa namanya dan the pervert clown yang dari tadi cuma bisa teriak.

Akirnya dek tamara pun tertangkap dan diikat di dekat air terjun. Nah disini adegan terbaik yang kedua di film ini, waktu dek tamara diikat chris fehn yang sudah nyiapin "tools for ngedukun" yang entah darimana datengnya, nyuapin telor mentah ke mulutnya dek tamara,,,yup dek tamara eats raw eggs. Tapi sayangnya chris fehn tidak mengikat terlalu kencang sehingga dek tamara bisa lepas dari ikatan tersebut dan lari ke kapal untuk ngambil harpoon gun (yang ternyata berkualitas buruk, berbeda dengan senjata di inglourious basterd yang terbukti bisa menembak) dan gunting. Saat ini yang masih hidup tinggal si cewe rambut aga2 coklat yg gw ga tau siapa namanya, tante mirasih udh mati dengan cara beheaded (sebelum mati tante mirasih sempat menggigit lengan chris fehn yang menghasilkan bunyi kkkrriiiiuuukkk dan kepalanya sempet kepentok kaca cm anehnya ga berdarah sama sekali...) dan the pervert clown mati dengan cara ketancep tepat dimata tapi dari belakang.

Chris fehn pun dibunuh oleh dek tamara yang pada akirnya ketemu dengan si cewe rambut aga2 coklat yg gw ga tau siapa namanya yang akirnya mereka ditemuin oleh polisi pantai yang tadi udh dipanggil dek tamara pake radio yg ga jelas hidup atau mati dengan cara teriak mayday mayday,,,!!! Emergency,,,!!!

Although only three members of the original lineup — Davis, guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer and bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu — remain, Davis said that the essence of KORN is intact. "I'll lay it down to you right now: all the writing was done by Fieldy and Munky," he said. "David [Silveria, ex-drummer] was there to write beats, but he wasn't really there. Head [ex-guitarist Brian Welch] wasn't really there for any of it, because he was so jacked up on drugs and worrying about other things. So the core of KORN is there. And adding Ray [Luzier] as the drummer — he loves playing drums and he plays just like David did. We're excited that we found someone that fits that mold. So I think we got the three that's the core of what KORN is."

Sumerian Records drops Sea of Treachery

Sumerian Records and San Diego, California metal band Sea Of Treachery recently parted ways. Essentially, the label lost confidence in the band following a host of line-up changes. For their part, the group no longer felt that Sumerian was the appropriate label home.

Regardless, Sea Of Treachery has entered Lambesis Studios in San Marcos, CA with engineer Joseph McQueen and producer Daniel Castleman (As I Lay Dying) to begin work on their sophomore release, "Wonderland." Additionally, the group has announced the addition of clean vocalist/bassist Chris Paterson (ex-Jamie's Elsewhere) to their roster.

A lot of people have probably called Marilyn Manson a pig before, and now he has a disease that has spread from pigs to humans. Yes, Manson has swine flu.

"So I have officially been diagnosed, by a real doctor, with THE SWINE FLU," Manson wrote on his MySpace blog on Monday.

Of course, Manson couldn't resist getting a shot in at his former girlfriend(s) (Evan Rachel Wood, anyone?) when making the announcement to the world.

"I know everyone will suggest that fucking a pig is how this disease was obtained. However, the doctor said, my past choices in women have in no way contributed to me acquiring this mysterious sickness.

"Unfortunately, I am going to survive."

It's not known whether Manson's swine flu will result in any cancellations, but maybe it's to blame for the shitty reviews his performances in support of the recently released The High End Of Low have been getting lately.

Manson isn't the only musician to contract swine flu this year. Melissa Auf Der Maur came down with the disease this summer, as did Kasabian and Jens Lekman.

Leah Dizon is Married???

American-born idol Leah Dizon (22) is now a married woman. Dizon finished her first tour with a show in Shibuya on Tuesday, and just before her last song, she shocked all of her fans by announcing that she got married last Friday.

Dizon's husband is reportedly a Japanese stylist that she met through work. They met about a year ago when he was involved in a shoot for one of Dizon's CD jackets. They became friends after Dizon began consulting with him about work, and it developed into a relationship. The man is said to be older than the idol, but still in his twenties.

The couple recently discovered that Dizon is pregnant, and they decided to get married. A press conference with more details is being held on Wednesday.

Breaking News: US Senate approves $700B bailout plan

After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.

Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.

In the House, leaders were working feverishly to convert enough opponents of the bill to push it through by Friday, just days after lawmakers there stunningly rejected an earlier version and sent markets plunging around the globe.

The measure didn't cause the same uproar in the Senate, where both parties' presidential candidates, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, made rare appearances to cast "aye" votes.

The rescue package lets the government spend billions of dollars to buy bad mortgage-related securities and other devalued assets held by troubled financial institutions. If successful, advocates say, that would allow frozen credit to begin flowing again and prevent a deep recession.

Even as the Senate voted, House leaders were hunting for the 12 votes they would need to turn around Monday's 228-205 defeat. They were especially targeting the 133 Republicans who voted "no."

Their opposition appeared to be easing after the Senate added $110 billion in tax breaks for businesses and the middle class, plus a provision to raise, from $100,000 to $250,000, the cap on federal deposit insurance.

They were also cheering a decision Tuesday by the Securities and Exchange Commission to ease rules that force companies to devalue assets on their balance sheets to reflect the price they can get on the market.

There were worries, though, that the tax breaks would cause some conservative-leaning Democrats who voted for the rescue Monday to abandon it because it would swell the federal deficit.

The story of THE TIELMAN BROTHERS begin in Surabaya, where the 4 little brothers Tielman and little sister Jane started performing together in 1945 folk songs and traditional dances. Father Herman a captain and later quartermaster in the KNIL (Royal Dutch Indonesian Army) and he had stayed in a Japanese concentration camp. He owned a house in Surabaya and started to play music together with his friends. Herman Tielman was a gifted all round musician and he was the one that supplied Reggy, Ponthon, Andy, Loulou and Jane with their rich musical luggage. From the started Ponthon wanted to play the big double bass. Reggy wanted to play banjo and little Loulou was fond of the drums. Andy learned to play lead guitar. During their first performance during a house party they surprised their fathers friends with difficult numbers like Tiger Rag and 12th Street Rag.

Gigs followed at several private parties in Soerbaya. It went fast and within half a year they went on tour as THE TIMOR RHYTHN BROTHERS -Timor is the island, where the Tielman family inherited from - along the camps of the Dutch soldiers. There after they received offers from the NIWIM (National Effort Welfare Indonesia) and together with famous Dutch artists like De Wama’s, the Ramblers and the Skymasters they toured along the major cities of Indonesia. Their shows consisted of music and dances from all over the Indonesian islands including corresponding costumes and ritual attributes like war spears and swords. During these shows father Herman Tielman joined in on guitar mother Flora took care for the general presentation.

On the 29th December 1949 the official independence proclamation of Indonesia took place. The Tielman family now performed for the Indonesians. They even performed in the palace of president Soekarno in Djakarta. When they grew older they started to cover the top hits in perfect close harmony. In 1951 they were introduced to Guitar Boogie of Arthur Smith. Andy later told in an interview: ‘this was the first song which my brothers and I converted into rock ‘n roll by adding drums to it’. Later they started playing number of Les Paul, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Gene Vincent. Andy also played together with Dolf de Vries in the band THE STARLIGHTS in Djakarta. Also on Sumatra he played without his brothers in the Hawaiian band of Freddy Wehner.

THE TIMOR RHYTHM BROTHERS –THE FOUR TIELMAN BROTHER-THE 4 T’s (Breda 1957-1959)

At a certain moment they were offered an extensive tour throughout Indonesia, but only on condition that they should change their Dutch nationality into Indonesian. In the opinion of Herman Tielman his children would have a better future in the Netherlands and in 1957 the family repatriated to Holland by boat. Ponthon was already repatriated one year earlier and lived with his wife in Bussum.

After arrival in Holland they were settled in Breda in boarding house Smulders at the Baronielaan. They possessed only of a small suitcase with thin tropical cloths and they were confrontated with the cold Dutch winter. Luckily the DMZ (Military Affairs Service) supplied them with warm clothings. Edu Schalk - later singer with the Poetiray Brothers from Oosterhout- was their first Indonesian friend in Breda. The brothers went to the music shop Spronk in Breda and after they had convinced the owner of their great talents with their version of Bye Bye Love by The Everly Brothers, they were allowed to buy the most expensive guitars from the shop at instalment purchase. That became the legendary big white Miller guitars and a sunburst Wilson guitar. These were products of the Egmond company from Eindhoven (type ES 57). Later they also bought Egmond combo amplifiers to replace the old radio’s they were using. Their first appearances took place in Hotel De Schuur at the Catharinalaan in Breda. In the beginning they performed as the TIMOR RHYTM BROTHERS but soon they called themselves THE FOUR TIELMAN BROTHERS or THE 4 T’s. They soon went famous in Breda and started gigging other places in the province Brabant like Kamp Lunetten in Vught and dancing De Cosmopoliet in ‘s Hertogenbosch.

The big aluminium balls of the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium still remember us of the world exebition Expo 58, which was held from the 17th April until the 19th October. At that time Hawaiian music was very popular in Europe and as a part of the Attraction Park a Hawaiian Village was created. With a decoration of palm trees, a blue sky and exotic plants and flowers Rudi Wairata (steel guitarist) and Mike Anoi (Guus 'broer' Arends) and their Hawaiian band played as main act. Several Dutch bands appeared and also THE FOUR TIELMAN BROTHERS were invited. They were allowed to fill a break of 20 minutes. They gave a spectacular rock ‘n roll show as never in Europe performed before. Andy played guitar with his foot, the guitars were played reverse in the neck, his guitar was played with the drumsticks of Loulou, the double bass was handled in a sheer acrobatic way and guitars were tossed between the brothers. The 20 minutes became almost 6 months.

The Belgian René ‘Nappie’ Vlasselaar became their manager and arranged a recording session for his label Fernap. Together with his brother Ferry he owned the jukebox company Fernap (Ferry and Nappy). Rock Little Baby Of Mine was an up tempo rock song written by Andy Tielman as well as the flip side the ballad You’re Still The One. The inspiration for both songs came from his idol Elvis Presley, but the specific Tielman style was already present despite the primitive recording techniques. During that period Andy got married in Brussels to Jeanine M. When after one night all their guitars and amplifiers were destroyed by a fire at the Expo his father in law Roger M. bought them enormously expensive Gibson guitars and amplifiers brought in straight away from the U.S.A. Hans Joachim Kulenkamp and Peter Frankenfeld, famous German TV showmasters, discovered the Tielman Brothers at the Expo and invited them at the end of 1958 to Germany for a guest appearance in their TV show and a musical show act in the movie Paprika

The very first performances of THE TIELMAN BROTHERS in Germany took place at at "Plankenkaffee Kosschenhaschen" in Mannheim from 3 up to 16 January 1959. One night their show was filmed by Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) and was live on German TV January 27, 1959. This footage was transmitted again in Germany in the SWF-Abendschau. The Tielman Brothers were also invited on the 29th January 1959 at Hotel Deutsches Theater in München during a movies ball at the occasion of the premiere of the movie Paprika. There they met actress Romy Schneider and were rewarded with movie medal. In 1959 the played mainly as an act in between in circuses and year fairs. Their Belgian manager had placed them that in that scene. With Circus ‘Fisher’ they travelled throughout Germany and they also did a guest appearance at the famous ‘Oktoberfest’ in München. Cor Aaftink at that time label manager (Imperial) of record company Bovema had the courage to offer the for Dutch standards very wild rock ‘n roll group a recording contract. Their debut single became one of the highlights in the Dutch pop history. The catchy rhythm in Record Hop and Swing It up, the unique vocal achievements of Andy and the instrumental backing with Ponthon still on double bass sounded very international.

In January 1960 the Netherlands and especially The Hague made their first aquaintance with THE TIELMAN BROTHERS. On the 3rd January 1960 they played in the Koepelzaal of the Haagse Dierentuin(The Hague Zoo). A show of which the happy few who attended it still talk about it with enormous respect. On the 23rd January 1960 they appeared on television. A typical Dutch winter evening to gather around he the stove and on the only TV channel available there was a broadcast of the AVRO (a Dutch Broadcasting Company). In the Weekendshow (broadcoasted from 't Spant in Bussum) four slim brothers appeared, who called themselves The Tielman Brothers. They started their spectacular performance with Black Eyes and continued their appearance with Rollin’Rock and every possible show element was brought into the floodlight. For instance a log drum solo from Loulou in which he took a drumming stroll around his drum kit, Ponthon crawling on the floor but still playing his white double bass, Andy playing guitar with his teeth and foot and reverse in his neck standing on the double bass and Loulou pounding musically on the strings of Andy’s guitar. Of course some elements were copied from Spike Jones and Bill Haley.

Such a sensational and wild rock ‘n roll show never ever occurred on Dutch television and in my personal opinion it was in no way surpassed any more. The rock ‘n roll of the Indonesian guys was so heart-warming in our cold and orthodox country, but the TV reviewers and music experts thought differently. A load of negative critics was printed in the news papers. These historic moments are luckily preserved and 45 seconds of it were used by Hans Heynen in his film documentary Rockin’Ramona. We see in this movie how the long and slender fingers of Andy run along his Gibson Les Paul guitar in Black Eyes. Rarity Records released later in 1991 this TV show in cooperation with Tojo even integrally and the sound track on CD. Also in January 1960 they recorded 4 songs in the Bovema Studio Heemstede. My Maria( through the years the most requested number), You’re Still The One( re-release of their first recording in 1958 sounded perfectly now), Black Eyes( their first instrumental which would become one of the highlights in the history of so called Indo Rock) and Rock Little Baby (also a re-release of their first record from 1958, but it sounded much better now).

After that they left for Germany. They started their well paid month contracts in the Ringstube in Mannheim. The family Fluhrman owned this dancing and the Ringstube was always called the Spudnik by the bands and visitors because of its decoration with rockets and futuristic space ships. The TIELMAN BROTHERS would return there often. Then they went to Studio 15 in Dusseldorf and the nice dancing Westhof in Heidelberg (also a legendary location because of the American GI’s who stayed there). Another famous dancing was the Jolly Bar in Hanau (this was also an American army camp). The returned once again to the Bovema to do some recordings for their first 10 inch LP and they asked for assistance of guitarist/singer Franky Luyten (no family despite the fact some people say that he was cousin or a married in family member). It concerned the following songs: O Sole Mio (a beautiful cover of the Elvis Presley hit- It’s Now Or Never), 18th Century Rock (the first Dutch rock band, who rearranged a classical music piece featuring twin lead guitars- their version of W.A. Mozart's Piano Sonata in C Major, K.545, main theme, got a load of negative criticisms. However the main theme was already addapted in 1939 by Raymond Scott and released as In An 18th Century Drawing Room and f.e. also covered by Guy Lombardo (1939), Glenn Miller (1944) and Hank Snow (1955), A.A.A. (an interesting instrumental based on Big Guitar by Owen Bradley), Pretend (perfect cover of the Carl Mann hit), April in Paris (a beautiful instrumental, but the actle title was I love Paris), Oh Rosalie (a hit for Conway Twitty), I Can’t Forget You (another typical and sensible vocal song by Andy Tielman in an unique way that only he could do) and Night Train (a sublime interpretation of this jazz standard written by Jimmy Forrest). 6 of these 8 recordings appeared earlier as singles. 18th Century Rock/Pretend even in the U.S.A. on Capital Records.O Sole Mio came in 1964 also on their 12 inch LP with on the sleeve the clear statement: We don’t have Indonesia anymore ………….. but we still have The Tielman Brothers. The instrumental Night Train remained very rare because this number only figured on their 10 inch LP ‘Tielman On Stage’ released in 1961.

Franky Luyten went along to Germany and he would be part of THE TIELMAN BROTHERS until the middle of 1964. In the spring of 1961 Andy Tielman bought his first (white) Fender Jazzmaster. Andy knew this guitar from the LP sleeves of The Ventures. This guitar appeared to be quite suitable for stage bouncing (much lighter then Gibson Les Pauls) and other guitar acrobatics and stage acts. This was quite important and in the end they band bought a complete Fender equipment outfit at Radio Barth in Stuttgart. During that period THE TIELMAN BROTHERS had their own mansion in Heidelberg.

In 1963 Jane Tielman went more and more on tour with the band. The same year that obtained also a recording contract in Germany for the Ariola label On the A side of their 1st single came Tahiti Jungle (an arrangement of Hawaiian War Chant of The Ventures) and on the B side the German song Fern Am Amazonas (Ariola had herewith the success of The Blue Diamonds in mind). The same recipe was followed for their 2nd German single: Java Guitars ( Andy's own interpretation Guitar Boogie, enormously popular and still copied today) with Weine Nicht Kleine Tamara (cover of the German singer Rudi Schurike from 1951) - in 1964 covered instrumentally in a very nice way by Jan de Hont and his ‘Maskers’ (a famous Dutch guitar group). Their 3rd single in 1962 was completely instrumental with an arrangement of a German folksong: Little Hänschen Twist and a magisterial treatment of Twistin’The Carioca (Les Paul instrumental originating from the film musical ‘Flying Down To Rio’ with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers from 1933).

In 1963 Andy and Reggy Tielman were involved with a severe car accident and came under a freight truck. Reggy recovered after 2 weeks, but Andy was for 4 days in coma and his arm was broken at 8 spots. His arm was put in plaster and his recovery lasted many months. As replacement Alfons Faverey joined THE TIELMAN BROTHERS. His band THE STRANGERS had split and he would remain with the band after the return of Andy. The guitar playing was less good and Andy concentrated even more on his vocals. Nevertheless Andy created a real innovation in the guitar world. He put 4 extra banjo strings on his Jazzmaster and with this 10 string guitar he could achieve very special effects and a big sound. The rumour goes that an employee of Fender came to the Sputnik to watch Andy’s unique guitar. Framus and Vox made prototypes of a 9 string guitar, probable influenced by Andy and almost all Indo- Rock bands in Germany followed Andy’s conversion of their lead guitars, Fender Jazzmasters of course. Together with Alfons they did a tour in Israel. Unfortunately no records were made during they stay of Alfons in the band. During 1964 Franky Luyten and Alfons Faverey were drafted for the Dutch military service. Because of disagreements Ponthon left THE TIELMAN BROTHERS played for some time with hs own band TIELMAN ROYAL and after that he went back to Indonesia where he stayed until his decease in April 2000.

Together with Hans Bax and Robby Latupeirisa coming from the broken up legendary Indo-Rock group THE JAVALINS started touring again in Germany again under the name THE TIELMAN BROTHERS, despite the fact that Andy himself had problems with this name. He would have preferred to continue as THE TIELMAN BAND. In this formation they recorded end of 1964 a live LP as well as a number of singes of which Hello Caterina was one of the better own compositions. This LP contained mainly covers because the repertoire had to be adapted more and more to due the pending trend of that period.

In 1965 they were invited to perform in the best known dancing of the Netherlands the posh Palais de Danse in Scheveningen( the seaside village of The Hague). Although they hadn’t played in Holland for years their fans came from all over the country and had to cue for the entrance well in advance, watching the sharp dressed band members arriving in their big limousines. They appeared with big success during July and August and their opening acts were the well known ZZ EN DE MASKERS and ANDY STARR & THE STRIPES. Jos Van Vliet, earlier president for THE CRAZY ROCKERS fan club and now Press Manager with Negram/Delta records invited them to the studio and the result was the beautiful album ‘East & West’, on which Andy excelled in 5 wonderful ballads like Unchained Melody, Maria and Danny Boy. Jane sang lead in Bring It On Home To Me. Reggy was the lead singer in a number of traditional Indonesian songs like Ole Sio and Kekasih Ku. The number Maria( West Side Story) was released as a single and reached with number 20 in the Dutch Top Forty its highest position in 1965. The self penned impressive instrumental Marabunta was also released in the U.S.A. on the Scepter label.

Andy was as far as we know the only famous lead guitarist who used the meanwhile very rare Vox Guitar Organ on stage in 1966. This instrument could reproduce organ- and guitar sounds. With its multiple controls and knobs it was not easy to play. More over this organ guitar could only be played with an electronic plectrum which was connected with the PC boards of the guitar. This organ guitar soon disappeared from the market, but once again Andy Tielman proofed to be a true innovator in guitar sound.

Until 1967 they recorded for the German Ariola label, but the typical Tielman style was most of the times far gone. In 1967 they had totally unexpected their biggest hit in their career. Little Bird was recorded in 1967 in the Netherlands and reached the number 7 in the Dutch Top Fourty. The record was released in the U.S.A. on the Ranwood label.

There after followed a period of constantly changing formations and they appeared as ANDY TIELMAN & THE TIELMAN BROTHERS. The typical Tielman sound even further disappeared and only in 1979 Andy would show something of his old glory. Especially the instrumental Sarinandé made quite an impact and it was very remarkable tot see at last a LP with 4 instrumental numbers, after all these were the real roots of the Tielman Brothers.

Lostprophets Album To Surface Next Year

The long-delayed Lostprophets album will now surface in 2009. Talking at their V Festival appearance last weekend, keyboardist Jamie Oliver said they were a little apprehensive of the slew of pop releases scheduled for the end of the year:

“We’re not really going to compete with all the pop bands coming out over Christmas. We’re not worried though, it’s going to be good”

The album hasn’t been the easiest for the band. Sessions with Goldfinger guitarist John Feldmann (also produced The Used) were largely scrapped before the band returned to ‘Liberation Transmission’ and Metallica knob twiddler Bob Rock.

Reaction to the new songs, said Oliver, has already filled the band with confidence for the album’s final release.

“We played a bunch of other new songs on some of the other shows we’ve just done. It’s always been a good reception, so I’m pretty confident people will be into it”.

The band is preparing to return to the studios this September.
Two months into rumors of a band break up (see Anthony Kiedis’s Rolling Stone interview) and more than two years since the release of their Grammy winning double album Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are finally ready to head back into the studio.

A lot has happened in the past two years for the Red Hot Chili Peppers: lead vocalist Kiedis is now a father, drummer Chad Smith has been working with Sammy Hager’s newest attempt at a supergroup, guitarist John Frusciante has been pursuing solo projects, and bassist Flea has, well, been Flea. As if completing an 18-month world tour spanning four continents weren’t enough.

Now, almost a year into the band’s hiatus, Smith has dismissed all rumors of a split. In fact, Smith claims that the best of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is yet to come.

After selling 7 million copies worldwide and receiving seven Grammy nominations for Stadium Arcadium, it’s hard to imagine how much further the Red Hot Chili Peppers have on their journey of authentic alternative rock genius and pure rock-stardom – 25 years in the making. It’s even more difficult, if not impossible when considering the stylistic diversity of their last album, to determine what road the band will take in getting there.

Maybe they’ll grow nostalgic of their early years and create a funk-infused jam album including Kiedis’s nonsensical raps, or maybe they’ll decide to create a more melodic and structure orientated album with Kiedis’s deeply personal lyrics. Maybe they’ll do both. Maybe they’ll do neither. Maybe they’ll do all of the above and still manage to discover new and uncharted musical territory in the formation of what may become one of the greatest albums to date.

For a band as talented, proven, and determined as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, surely all this and more is not impossible. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though – all there is to be 100 percent certain of is that a new album is soon to be underway. For now, everything else remains pure speculation.

Developed by NRC (Nokia Research Center) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom), Morph is a concept phone that using nanotechnology which enables materials and components that are flexible, stretchable, transparent and remarkably strong. Users should be able to transform their cell phone into different shapes.

Brian "Head" Welch is from Bakersfield, California. At the tender age of 11, Head picked up a guitar and found his original calling. Barely out of high school, he helped found the controversial rock band Korn. The band became a grammy award winning, multi-platinum selling band, and quickly soared to the top of the music world while selling some 30 Million records internationally. The band was credited with being the major influence in the rise of the Nu Metal Movement. While with Korn, Head won two grammy awards and several MTV music video awards.
In February 2005, Head shocked the music world when he resigned from Korn to re-dedicate his life to Christ and focus on raising his daughter, Jennea, as a single father. The event set off a media frenzy as observers around the world sought out to understand what led this rock star out of the darkness and into the light.
Significantly, and perhaps most importantly, upon his resignation from Korn, Head made clear to the music world that he had not retired from the music and entertainment industry. With his newfound calling, Head is committed to changing the youth of this nation through his music and other entertainment ventures. In this regard, Head penned an autobiography of his life, picked up and released by Harper Collins Publishers in July 2007, entitled, "Save Me From Myself." Head gained further acclaim as a successful author, when the book quickly hit the New York Times Best Seller List (non-fiction). In his memoir, Head talks for the first time about his shocking embrace of God, and the tumultuous decade of drug and alcohol addiction that led him to his faith, where he was completely and instantly healed of his addictions.
Head¹s debut album also entitled, "Save Me From Myself," is a testimony of his life as he battled with drug and alcohol addiction, leaving KoRn, and finding spirituality. His debut album is a heavy metal epic, with a positive message. A Chihuahua puppy born in Japan with a natural heart shaped pattern on his coat has captured the hearts of animal lovers around the world.

Heart-kun, as he has been named by owner Emiko Sakurada, was born on May 18, 2007, one of a litter of puppies at the Pucchin Dogs shop.

His natural heart-shaped markings on his fur have made him an instant star in Japan. And it was a case of puppy love across the world as the tiny dog made television appearances worldwide.

Shop owner Ms Sakurada got the surprise of her life when she saw the birthmark heart markings in the fur of her tiny pooch.

She said it was the first time a puppy with these marks had been born out of the 1,000 animals that she has bred.

Since Heart-kun was born, he has brought a lot of luck, according to Ms Sakurada. He sister got lucky on the lottery and won a concert ticket.

Heart-kun's owner has been inundated with requests from people wanting to purchase the unique puppy. But they can keep their paws off him, she says, for her little four-legged friend ain't going nowhere!

'Harry Potter' Actor Stabbed to Death

(AP / LONDON) — A British teenage actor playing a minor role in the upcoming "Harry Potter" film was stabbed to death during a brawl in London on Saturday, police said.

Rob Knox, 18, was stabbed after he got caught up in a fight outside a bar in southwest London early Saturday, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Knox plays Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby in the upcoming film "Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment of the popular series set for release in November.

Warner Bros., the studio that is producing the film, said it was shocked by the news.

Knox was one of five young men taken to various hospitals after the brawl, police said. Among them was a 21-year-old who has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The fight did not appear to be gang-related, police added, but it puts the number of violent teenage deaths in London at 14 so far this year.

It's not as simple as you think it is. there's an association named World Rock-Paper-Scissors Society. this society annualy held a competition between its members, even up to the world championships. do they always depending on luck to win the game?? ....NOT!!! they have their own strategies not probabilities to win. according to the society, the only way to find out what your opponent will choose either rock, papers, scissors is depending on how much rounds you have won during the game. the leading palyers tend to use scissors as a symbol of aggresivnes, paper is for the softer attacks and rock is used as the backup plan.....sounds funny??? yeah for us.....but to them its strategies...

99942 Apophis (pronounced /əˈpoʊfɪs/, previously known by its provisional designation 2004 MN₄) is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a relatively large probability (up to 2.7%) that it would strike the Earth in 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However there remained a possibility that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole, a precise region in space no more than about 400 meters across, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale until August 2006. It broke the record for the highest level on the Torino Scale, being, for only a short time, a level 4, before it was lowered.

Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the "keyhole" would likely be missed and on August 5, 2006, Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 on the Torino Scale. As of October 19, 2006, the impact probability for April 1 3, 2036, was calculated as 1 in 45,000. An additional impact date in 2037 was also identified; the impact probability for that encounter was calculated as 1 in 12.3 million.

In April 2008 news organizations, following a publication by the German tabloid Bild^, widely reported that 13 year-old Nico Marquardt from Potsdam, Germany, had recalculated the odds as part of a science competition, and found the risk had been underestimated. due to the publication of fitna movie some sharing sites have been blocked... this includes the most popular video sharing networks youtube, affiliation sites like myspace, and others.

some providers even blocked blogger...i dont know the reason behind the blockage of blogger but i think that some blogger post this movie as a new inside their blog.

i dont know how long will it last but i hope its not long term blocking...and i still think that this is ridiculous. being selfish or just trying to find ways to corrupt peoples money....yeah they and their sins...

lets count it...lets say for each premium SMS you've sent worth Rp 2000. from that amount of money 60% is for the SMS Center (Indosat, telkomsel, Excelcom ect.) and the rest of it 40% goes to........yes the organizer!!!

well anyone can be the organizer...with proper funding to rent an online server and the ability to develop the software.

in this case if the organizer get 40% share on each SMS (around Rp 800), then IF 5% of all the Indonesian or lets say a 100 of your friends, who has a cellphone and watch reality TV i'm sure around 40% of them did watch reality TV and sending SMS'....then the organizer will have around Rp 80 billion...and another thing if the grand price was a 1 billion luxurious house on any location you want...

1:80 you count the profit..

plus the event supporting statement to send as many SMS to keep you favourites safe....wtf!!??

10 Important Differences Between Brains and Computers

Difference # 1: Brains are analogue; computers are digitalIt's easy to think that neurons are essentially binary, given that they fire an action potential if they reach a certain threshold, and otherwise do not fire. This superficial similarity to digital "1's and 0's" belies a wide variety of continuous and non-linear processes that directly influence neuronal processing.For example, one of the primary mechanisms of information transmission appears to be the rate at which neurons fire - an essentially continuous variable. Similarly, networks of neurons can fire in relative synchrony or in relative disarray; this coherence affects the strength of the signals received by downstream neurons. Finally, inside each and every neuron is a leaky integrator circuit, composed of a variety of ion channels and continuously fluctuating membrane potentials.Failure to recognize these important subtleties may have contributed to Minksy & Papert's infamous mischaracterization of perceptrons, a neural network without an intermediate layer between input and output. In linear networks, any function computed by a 3-layer network can also be computed by a suitably rearranged 2-layer network. In other words, combinations of multiple linear functions can be modeled precisely by just a single linear function. Since their simple 2-layer networks could not solve many important problems, Minksy & Papert reasoned that that larger networks also could not. In contrast, the computations performed by more realistic (i.e., nonlinear) networks are highly dependent on the number of layers - thus, "perceptrons" grossly underestimate the computational power of neural networks.

Difference # 2: The brain uses content-addressable memoryIn computers, information in memory is accessed by polling its precise memory address. This is known as byte-addressable memory. In contrast, the brain uses content-addressable memory, such that information can be accessed in memory through "spreading activation" from closely related concepts. For example, thinking of the word "fox" may automatically spread activation to memories related to other clever animals, fox-hunting horseback riders, or attractive members of the opposite sex.The end result is that your brain has a kind of "built-in Google," in which just a few cues (key words) are enough to cause a full memory to be retrieved. Of course, similar things can be done in computers, mostly by building massive indices of stored data, which then also need to be stored and searched through for the relevant information (incidentally, this is pretty much what Google does, with a few twists).Although this may seem like a rather minor difference between computers and brains, it has profound effects on neural computation. For example, a lasting debate in cognitive psychology concerned whether information is lost from memory because of simply decay or because of interference from other information. In retrospect, this debate is partially based on the false asssumption that these two possibilities are dissociable, as they can be in computers. Many are now realizing that this debate represents a false dichotomy.

Difference # 3: The brain is a massively parallel machine; computers are modular and serialAn unfortunate legacy of the brain-computer metaphor is the tendency for cognitive psychologists to seek out modularity in the brain. For example, the idea that computers require memory has lead some to seek for the "memory area," when in fact these distinctions are far more messy. One consequence of this over-simplification is that we are only now learning that "memory" regions (such as the hippocampus) are also important for imagination, the representation of novel goals, spatial navigation, and other diverse functions.Similarly, one could imagine there being a "language module" in the brain, as there might be in computers with natural language processing programs. Cognitive psychologists even claimed to have found this module, based on patients with damage to a region of the brain known as Broca's area. More recent evidence has shown that language too is computed by widely distributed and domain-general neural circuits, and Broca's area may also be involved in other computations (see here for more on this).

Difference # 4: Processing speed is not fixed in the brain; there is no system clockThe speed of neural information processing is subject to a variety of constraints, including the time for electrochemical signals to traverse axons and dendrites, axonal myelination, the diffusion time of neurotransmitters across the synaptic cleft, differences in synaptic efficacy, the coherence of neural firing, the current availability of neurotransmitters, and the prior history of neuronal firing. Although there are individual differences in something psychometricians call "processing speed," this does not reflect a monolithic or unitary construct, and certainly nothing as concrete as the speed of a microprocessor. Instead, psychometric "processing speed" probably indexes a heterogenous combination of all the speed constraints mentioned above.Similarly, there does not appear to be any central clock in the brain, and there is debate as to how clock-like the brain's time-keeping devices actually are. To use just one example, the cerebellum is often thought to calculate information involving precise timing, as required for delicate motor movements; however, recent evidence suggests that time-keeping in the brain bears more similarity to ripples on a pond than to a standard digital clock.

Difference # 5 - Short-term memory is not like RAMAlthough the apparent similarities between RAM and short-term or "working" memory emboldened many early cognitive psychologists, a closer examination reveals strikingly important differences. Although RAM and short-term memory both seem to require power (sustained neuronal firing in the case of short-term memory, and electricity in the case of RAM), short-term memory seems to hold only "pointers" to long term memory whereas RAM holds data that is isomorphic to that being held on the hard disk. (See here for more about "attentional pointers" in short term memory).Unlike RAM, the capacity limit of short-term memory is not fixed; the capacity of short-term memory seems to fluctuate with differences in "processing speed" (see Difference #4) as well as with expertise and familiarity.

Difference # 6: No hardware/software distinction can be made with respect to the brain or mindFor years it was tempting to imagine that the brain was the hardware on which a "mind program" or "mind software" is executing. This gave rise to a variety of abstract program-like models of cognition, in which the details of how the brain actually executed those programs was considered irrelevant, in the same way that a Java program can accomplish the same function as a C++ program.Unfortunately, this appealing hardware/software distinction obscures an important fact: the mind emerges directly from the brain, and changes in the mind are always accompanied by changes in the brain. Any abstract information processing account of cognition will always need to specify how neuronal architecture can implement those processes - otherwise, cognitive modeling is grossly underconstrained. Some blame this misunderstanding for the infamous failure of "symbolic AI."

Difference # 7: Synapses are far more complex than electrical logic gatesAnother pernicious feature of the brain-computer metaphor is that it seems to suggest that brains might also operate on the basis of electrical signals (action potentials) traveling along individual logical gates. Unfortunately, this is only half true. The signals which are propagated along axons are actually electrochemical in nature, meaning that they travel much more slowly than electrical signals in a computer, and that they can be modulated in myriad ways. For example, signal transmission is dependent not only on the putative "logical gates" of synaptic architecture but also by the presence of a variety of chemicals in the synaptic cleft, the relative distance between synapse and dendrites, and many other factors. This adds to the complexity of the processing taking place at each synapse - and it is therefore profoundly wrong to think that neurons function merely as transistors.

Difference #8: Unlike computers, processing and memory are performed by the same components in the brainComputers process information from memory using CPUs, and then write the results of that processing back to memory. No such distinction exists in the brain. As neurons process information they are also modifying their synapses - which are themselves the substrate of memory. As a result, retrieval from memory always slightly alters those memories (usually making them stronger, but sometimes making them less accurate - see here for more on this).

Difference # 9: The brain is a self-organizing systemThis point follows naturally from the previous point - experience profoundly and directly shapes the nature of neural information processing in a way that simply does not happen in traditional microprocessors. For example, the brain is a self-repairing circuit - something known as "trauma-induced plasticity" kicks in after injury. This can lead to a variety of interesting changes, including some that seem to unlock unused potential in the brain (known as acquired savantism), and others that can result in profound cognitive dysfunction (as is unfortunately far more typical in traumatic brain injury and developmental disorders).One consequence of failing to recognize this difference has been in the field of neuropsychology, where the cognitive performance of brain-damaged patients is examined to determine the computational function of the damaged region. Unfortunately, because of the poorly-understood nature of trauma-induced plasticity, the logic cannot be so straightforward. Similar problems underlie work on developmental disorders and the emerging field of "cognitive genetics", in which the consequences of neural self-organization are frequently neglected .Difference # 10: Brains have bodiesThis is not as trivial as it might seem: it turns out that the brain takes surprising advantage of the fact that it has a body at its disposal. For example, despite your intuitive feeling that you could close your eyes and know the locations of objects around you, a series of experiments in the field of change blindness has shown that our visual memories are actually quite sparse. In this case, the brain is "offloading" its memory requirements to the environment in which it exists: why bother remembering the location of objects when a quick glance will suffice? A surprising set of experiments by Jeremy Wolfe has shown that even after being asked hundreds of times which simple geometrical shapes are displayed on a computer screen, human subjects continue to answer those questions by gaze rather than rote memory. A wide variety of evidence from other domains suggests that we are only beginning to understand the importance of embodiment in information processing.Bonus Difference: The brain is much, much bigger than any [current] computerAccurate biological models of the brain would have to include some 225,000,000,000,000,000 (225 million billion) interactions between cell types, neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, axonal branches and dendritic spines, and that doesn't include the influences of dendritic geometry, or the approximately 1 trillion glial cells which may or may not be important for neural information processing. Because the brain is nonlinear, and because it is so much larger than all current computers, it seems likely that it functions in a completely different fashion.

One was that Edison Records worked only on Edison’s players, while other manufacturers’ conformed to the industry standard and worked interchangeably. Rap Attack
#8 Warner junks InterscopeWhen anti-rap crusaders wanted to deliver a body blow to hip-hop, they took aim at the Warner Music Group, because its corporate parent, Time Warner, was American-owned and publicly traded. When Ice-T’s “Cop Killer” became too hot to handle, Warner Music dropped him, but the label still enjoyed huge rap hits—particularly through Death Row Records, partially owned by their Interscope label. But when Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole attacked Warner Music in his stump speech, Time Warner panicked, ordering the sale of Interscope to rival Universal. Universal soon became the biggest record company in the world—in large measure due to Interscope hits by Tupac, Dr. Dre and Eminem. Warner Music went on a long slide and was finally sold in 2004.Unintended consequence Time Warner shareholders never have to worry about who killed Tupac.

Something’s Happening, But You Don’t Know What It Is
#7 Music publisher gives away Bob DylanIn the early 1960s Leeds/Duchess was a legendary music-publishing company but far from the hippest: It knew Tin Pan Alley but couldn’t find a Greenwich Village coffeehouse with a compass. Yet when Columbia signed Bob Dylan in 1961, they steered him to Leeds, where he happily signed a publishing deal with a $1,000 advance. The following year, Dylan’s new manager, Albert Grossman, got out of the deal with the disinterested publisher simply by repaying the $1,000. Dylan’s new publisher, the savvier M. Witmark & Sons, received 237 songs—many of them future standards worth tens of millions of dollars—in just the first three years.Unintended consequence The receptionists at Leeds/Duchess never have to field calls asking what “All Along the Watchtower” is really about.

Nothing Exceeds Like Excess
#6 Casablanca rides strong sales straight to the poorhouseNo record label represents the coked-up inanity of the late ’70s like disco-driven behemoth Casablanca. In 1978, the label simultaneously shipped a million copies of four solo albums by each member of their biggest rock act, Kiss, so they could justifiably claim the records “shipped platinum.” The albums sold well—but not that well. Record stores returned hundreds of thousandsof unsold copies, inspiring comedian Robert Klein to joke that Casablanca’s releases “shipped gold and returned platinum.” The label continued to lose millions a year throughout the late ’70s, until part-owner PolyGram Records bought out founder Neil Bogart for $15 million in 1980. Unintended consequence Hey, man—400,000 extra surfaces to snort drugs from!

Whoa, Mama
#5 The RIAA sues a struggling single mom for digital piracyn In the court of public opinion, it’s hard to find a more sympathetic defendant than a single mother of two, earning $36,000 a year. So what in the name of common decency was the Recording Industry Association of America thinking when it went after 30-year-old Jammie Thomas from Brainerd, Minnesota? The RIAA accused Thomas of using the P2P service Kazaa to illegally share mp3 files of 24 songs, including Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills.” Thomas pleaded not guilty, blaming the shared files on mistaken identity, but last October a jury disagreed and fined her $222,000. That breaks down to a whopping $9,250 per song—more than six times her annual salary. At press time, Thomas was planning an appeal.Unintended consequence The nation’s toddlers and fluffy kittens rush to erase their hard drives.

Pay (Somebody Else) To Play
#4 Indie promoters take the major labels to the cleanersAfter the payola scandals of the ’50s, the government barred record labels from paying radio stations to play records. The solution: set up middlemen to do the dirty work! “Independent promoters” represented the labels’ interests to radio programmers, creating a massive cash flow of corruption. Even a mid-size hit could cost $700,000 in promo expenses—cash, vacations, drugs and other illicit rewards for mustachioed DJs—and labels ended up paying to get airplay for huge artists the stations would have spun anyway. A lot of coked-up DJs got nice tans, while the labels spent unnecessary millions and covered their balance sheets in bloody red.Unintended consequence Colombian GDP spikes each time Mariah Carey releases a single.

Detroit At a Discount
#3 Motown sells for a pittanceIn 1988 Berry Gordy Jr., reportedly losing millions of dollars on the label he had founded decades earlier, sold Motown and its incomparable back catalogue to MCA and investment company Boston Ventures for $60 million. How bad was that price? The next year, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss sold their A&M Records to PolyGram for roughly $500 million. In 1990, David Geffen got about $700 million for Geffen Records and in ’92, Richard Branson unloaded Virgin Records to EMI for $960 million. And five years after buying Motown, Boston Ventures cashed out, selling the label to PolyGram for $325 million—a return of more than 500 percent.Unintended consequence The Motown Atlantic airline, and Berry’s career as a trans-global balloonist, have yet to materialize.

Tomorrow Never Knows
#2 Decca Records A&R exec tells Fab Four, “No, thanks”Dick Rowe was not the only record-label executive who passed on the Beatles in the early ’60s, but he was the only one who brushed off their manager, Brian Epstein, with the astute prediction that: “Groups with guitars are on their way out.” Epstein begged Rowe to reconsider, so Rowe hopped a train to Liverpool to check out the band live. CDs are fine things for listening to and archiving, but they're bulky. Think of all the shelf space you could free up if that digital music resided on one little hard drive rather than hundreds of boxed-up plastic discs. It's a commitment, but putting all your music on a computer has advantages besides space savings.

First and foremost, building a media server gives you access to all of your tunes from anywhere in your house. You'll be able to search for songs and play them back whether you're in your kitchen, living room or your home office, regardless of where in your home your media server sits. If you're extra savvy, you can also set up your server to be accessible over the internet.Wherever you access your music, it can all be indexed and sorted, shuffled and mixed, shared, streamed, and more.

1. Allocate spaceThe first step is to set aside a big chunk of storage space for your music files. You may want to dedicate an entire hard drive to this purpose. If it's an external hard drive, it can travel with you; but with the right server software, that's unnecessary. Because the file formats we'll be using are standard, you can make decisions about the software later.Tip: Go big. Set up a system you can keep filling for years to come. Dedicate 500GB or more. Or, if you want to spend a little more, get a storage system that's easy to use and to upgrade like a Drobo.

2. Choose an encoding formatMP3 is the most famous format for encoding music, and as such its advantage is that it can be played on pretty much every player in the universe. But it's neither the best-sounding nor the most compact. FLAC files are losslessly compressed, meaning they sound exactly as good as the CDs they come from (and indeed CDs can be reconstructed exactly from FLAC files), but they take up much more storage space than MP3s do.Which you choose depends on your needs. If you choose MP3 (or Ogg, or another lossy encoding format) you also need to decide on a bitrate. The bitrate determines the amount of music information that gets captured when you rip your music to a digital file (in the next step). The higher the bitrate, the better the sound, but the bigger the file. Make these important decisions before you commit your entire music library to a format you don't like.Tip: Again, think as big as possible. Better to rip at a higher bitrate now while sacrificing some hard drive space than be stuck with lower-quality music files down the road.

The most convenient tools are the hands-off ones that allow you to just put in a CD, wait for it to be ripped, encoded, and tagged, then just take it out and put in another.On Linux, abcde is very good. On Windows, Exact Audio Copy is highly recommended. On Macs, you can use iTunes if you fine-tune its encoding preferences, but xACT is much better.Each CD takes several minutes to rip. Afterward, you may need to correct the tags with a tool like Picard. The easiest approach may be to pay a neighborhood teenager to feed the discs into your computer one by one.

4. Serve itArmed with a ton of digital music on your hard drive, serve that music on up.Install the free SqueezeCenter software on your music server and stream away. You can stream to any computer on your network either through the browser or using software like iTunes or Winamp.For serving music elsewhere in your home, a Squeezebox is a great tool -- it hooks up to any stereo, where it's controllable by a computer or by a remote. It's a financial investment, but the sound is great, and it can do lots of very cool things, from smart analysis and mixing, to on-the-fly correction for the acoustic quirks of your listening room.You can also serve your music around your network using iTunes. The application, a free download from Apple, has local library sharing built in. Just set up iTunes on your server and enable sharing in the application's Preferences. Your library will show up wherever else iTunes is running on your LAN -- look under the "Shared" menu in your sources list.One of Jinzora's many available skinsOne of Jinzora's many available skinsServing your music over the internet is a bit more complicated, since it will require you to tweak your broadband router a little bit. There are many ways to do it, none of them too difficult. You can serve music over the web if your computer is set up to run as a web server. If it's not, install Apache and PHP (all-in-one installers exist for Windows and Mac OS X) then download and install Jinzora, a free application that indexes all your music and makes it available through a web browser.
